What Massage Can Do For
You
Everyone can benefit from a professional
massage. Massage therapy can:
-
Provide anything from soothing relaxation to
deeper therapy for specific physical problems. -
Relieve your stress and anxiety. -
Increase the nourishing blood supply to your
tissues. -
Aid your recovery from pulled muscle or strained
ligaments. -
Ease many uncomfortable stresses of childbearing,
including edema, backaches and exhaustion. -
Relieve certain repetitive motion injuries related
to on-the-job activities. -
Greatly reduce your pain if you suffer from such
problems as Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction
(TMJ), Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or
Fibromyalgia. -
Compensate, at least in part, for the lack of
exercise and muscular contraction if you are a person
who because of age, injury, or illness, is forced to
remain inactive.

What You Can
Expect
You will be asked about your reasons for
getting a massage, current physical condition, medical
history, life-style, stress level, and areas of
pain.
You will be asked to undress in private
and drape yourself with the sheet provided by the
therapist.
You may leave your underwear on or take if
off at your own discretion. You will lie down
on a comfortable padded massage table.
The therapist will undrape only that part
of your body being massaged, ensuring that your modesty
is respected. |

How Massage Releases Tension and Promotes
Relaxation
-
Muscle tension, whether from normal activities or
from awkward movement or stress, contributes to muscle
fatigue and pain by compressing nerve fibers in the
muscle.
-
Prolonged contraction interferes with the
elimination of chemical wastes in the muscles and
surrounding tissues, and can cause frequent nerve and
muscle pain.
-
If not properly addressed, these body tensions
have a tendency to build into chronic patterns of
stress.
-
Prolonged tensions can often cause pain in other
parts of the body. For example, headaches
are often caused by overly tense muscles in the neck,
shoulders, and lower back. Even contracted
abdominal muscles can trigger headaches in certain
people (a common complaint of women with menstrual
difficulties).
-
For these tension-related conditions, massage can
break up muscle waste deposits and stimulate
circulation.
-
Accumulated metabolic wastes often form "trigger
points" within the muscles. These are
specific areas that are painful to the
touch. They feel like knots or ropes within
the muscle and perpetuate muscle
tension. By applying deep pressure to these
points, the tension or spasm can be eliminated.
