Permanent cosmetics buys time for busy women

By Chanel Studebaker

Permanent makeup has come a long way over the past decade, with major improvements in quality, tools and technique. Studio 28 in Graham offers iron-oxide free permanent makeup, applied by technicians certified by the American Institute of Intradermal Cosmetics.

Using pigments free of iron-oxide is important for several reasons. First, the body eventually absorbs the iron-oxide from the pigment, altering the colors on your skin. “Reds turn bluish, light browns turn pink and dark browns tend to turn purple,” said Studio 28 owner Monica Armour.

Iron-oxide is also more likely to cause allergic reactions or result in pigment migration. Pigments containing iron-oxide are unsafe for MRI machines.

“The machines magnetic forces pull on the pigment and can cause burning or scarring,” said Patty Clarke, a Permanent Cosmetic Technician at Studio 28.

Permanent makeup is a wonderful timesaver for women with hectic routines, ideal for athletes who perspire frequently and a safe alternative to those with allergies to topical cosmetics. It’s also handy for women with failing eyesight.

Armour and Clarke help clients choose a classic color palate that complements their skin tones and stay away from trends.

“We want to make sure that we give you an enduring style, and that 20 years from now, your makeup looks good,” Armour said.

The most common applications are eyebrows, eyeliner and lips. On average, it takes about two hours per procedure. The application of topical anesthetic, then a second anesthetic is a major time factor. Permanent eyebrows cost $350,eyeliner and lips run $550 each. Inner eyeliner costs another $200.

Costs include a consultation, aftercare materials and a touch-up within six weeks.

“Once color has stabilized and the skin has healed, clients may want to brighten their color or make small adjustments,” Armour said.

Studio 28 also does corrective work and restorative work, including scar camouflage and areola restoration for breast cancer survivors or those with augmentation scars.
